Background Context
On December 5, 2011, the governments of Canada and Quebec signed an agreement for carrying out a joint feasibility study on the establishment of a marine protected area around the Îles de la Madeleine (Magdalen Islands).
Study area

The study area, which covers some of 17,000 km2, encompasses most of the Magdalen Shallows plateau. It features a large plateau averaging less than 80 metres in depth and consisting primarily of sedimentary rock and sandy deposits.

Information exchange workshop on the marine environment of the island

On March 7 and 8, the team of researchers at the University of Quebec at Rimouski (UQAR) responsible for conducting the ecological and uses components of the Canada/Quebec marine protected area study, invited nearly 40 representatives from various marine sectors to take part in an information exchange workshop.

Summer is just around the corner, and with it comes an increase in marine activities. Fishermen are already out on the water catching the sea’s bounty for which the islands are famous. We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a fantastic, abundant and successful fishing season.
